$145,000 raised to date at 28th Annual APDA Massachusetts Parkinson Walkathon

Sunday, May 4th drew a large and excited crowd to the 28th Annual American Parkinson Disease Association (APDA) Massachusetts Walkathon. Over a thousand walkers and their supporters gathered to raise funds toward Parkinson's disease research and the national APDA Information & Referral Center network. As in past years, the Walk took place at Reebok International Headquarters in Canton, MA.

As friends and families arrived, representatives from the APDA National Resource Center for Rehabilitation at Boston University introduced a variety of great exercise programs available to individuals with Parkinson's disease in Massachusetts. They were joined by teachers from Urbanity Dance for Parkinson's, Jane Arsham from Moving Easy Tai Chi for Parkinson's, Renee Le Verrier from LIM Yoga, Al Latulippe from Rock Steady Boxing Boston, Keith and Linda Hall from Parkinson's Fitness, and representatives from local Community Wellness Programs. Walkers were welcome to participate in sample classes that took place before the Walkathon. For information on exercise for PD, contact the APDA National Resource Center for Rehabilitation at 888-606-1688.

The day's events began with a welcome from Kristin Stapleton, APDA Massachusetts Chapter President. The Chapter awarded four $500 scholarships to high-school seniors whose families have been affected by Parkinson's disease. Congratulations to Lital Avnor, Catherine Fraser, Garrett Holman, and Mary O'Connor for winning these scholarships. Joe Public of Kiss 108 announced the eighty-four teams and the walkers enthusiastically took to the track.

The Walk grounds were filled with tables set up by vendors and sponsors. Throughout the afternoon, attendees enjoyed freshly filled cannoli from Alfredo Aiello Italian Food and were kept cool with ice cream from the Corduck family. The Merrimack Valley Photography Club donated their time and skills to beautifully photograph this event.

The raffle, organized by APDA MA Chapter Board member Meg McAuliffe, was a success, raising over $6,000 for the Walk. All prizes received by the Chapter were donated by companies and individual supporters. They included a variety of great items, including Red Sox tickets, museum passes, and gift baskets. Congratulation to all of our lucky winners!

Thanks to the incredible generosity of the Massachusetts Parkinson community, $145,000 has been raised, to date! For the fourth year in a row, we are happy to congratulate first place Team Tobin for their fundraising success, raising over $11,000. Check out our website to see how great all of our teams and individuals walkers did: apdaparkinson.donordrive.com/event/mawalk2014.

We would like to thank all of our volunteers, team captains, walkers, and sponsors for supporting the APDA Massachusetts Chapter this year and without whom this event could not be possible. We could not have done this without you and hope to see everyone again next year! Remember, it's not too late to make a donation.
